Mr. Derrell Wayne Whatley, 71, of Chula died Monday, November 30, 2020.

A family beachside memorial service will be held at a later date.

Derrell was born August 15, 1949 in Dublin, Georgia to the late Rev. Lacy Whatley and Mavis Stracner Whatley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Savannah Kennon. Mr. Whatley was a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church of Tifton.

Derrell moved frequently as a child, but his most precious memories were of living in Fernandina Beach. As a Sophomore in high school, he moved to Turner County where he met and began dating Joan Lanneau. They were married on August 24, 1969 and were married for over fifty-one years. Derrell always had a particular love for the beach and enjoyed returning to the coast frequently. He also enjoyed coaching his oldest daughter in softball, working out, running and cruising in a convertible. He loved all kinds of music and his bulldogs Maude and Buttercup.

Derrell is survived by his wife, Joan Lanneau Whatley of Chula; his daughters and sons-in-law, Lacy and Dr. Robert Kennon of Middlebury, Connecticut and Andrea and Dan Milton of Tifton; three grandchildren, Alexander and Katherine Kennon and Gabriel Milton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either St. Anne’s Episcopal Church Building Fund, PO Box 889, Tifton, Ga., 31793 or Alzheimer’s Association, 2402 Tift Avenue N, Suite 102, Tifton, Ga. 31794.
