Irene Estelle Delgado Darlington, a distinguished artist, dedicated public servant, and cherished mother, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2026, at Autumn Village - 2 in Jackson, Georgia. Born on July 31, 1930, in Blue Island, Illinois, Irene’s life was marked by a vibrant blend of creativity, commitment, and community spirit.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Tift Memorial Gardens. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of a woman whose artistic gifts, professional achievements, and loving spirit touched many lives.

Irene pursued her passion for art at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she honed her talents and developed the remarkable skills that later earned her recognition as an award-winning artist and painter. Irene and her husband held several art shows and even entertained the Governor of Wyoming Stan Hathaway. Her deep appreciation for artistry extended beyond painting to her love for handmade pottery and southwestern pottery, interests that enriched her life and inspired those around her.

During her career, Irene served with honor as a bilingual secretary for the United States Air Force and various state government agencies, demonstrating a remarkable capacity to bridge cultures and communicate effectively. Following her service, she embraced entrepreneurship, managing a self-employed gift store that became a beloved local establishment.

Her steadfast faith was another cornerstone of her life, and she found spiritual solace and community at Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church. Her commitment to her faith and the church community was a source of great pride for her.

Irene’s family members remember her fondly and hold her memory dear. She is survived by her beloved son, Sanford and Sondra Darlington, Jr.; her grandchildren, Melody Owen, Sanford Darlington, IV., Christopher Darlington, Sanford P. Dorn, Danielle Tuly, Miranda Darlington and Thomas Darlington; her great grandchildren, Ammon P. Owen, Gareth P. Tuly and Leila C. Darlington; her sister, Dianna Delgado-Mullen and her brother, Leroy Delgado.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Sanford Newell Darlington, Sr.; her father, Joseph Delgado; and her mother, Petra Flores Delgado.

Irene’s life invites us to reflect on the enduring power of creativity, dedication, and love. Her legacy as an artist, community member, and cherished mother will continue to inspire all who knew her.
