James "Jim" McCoy Barber

Tifton, Georgia

Mr. James "Jim" McCoy Barber, 94, of Tifton passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at Legacy Village Assisted Living Center of Tifton.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 21, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Albritton Funeral Directors with Rev. Chip Grantham officiating. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 20th from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Mr. Barber's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Barber was born October 11, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Amos M. Barber and Martha Hamer Barber. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Louise Bryant Barber to whom he was married for fifty-seven years when she died on October 14, 2008; his brother, Amos Franklin Barber; his two sisters, Eleanor Whitehead and May Jones. Mr. Barber was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Tifton where he served on the Administrative Board, a Lay Leader and also taught Sunday School. He was a member of Club 55. Mr. Barber received his B.S. and M.S. Degrees from Auburn University. He taught school in Alabama for seven years and did research in Horticulture at Auburn for five years. Mr. Barber came to Tifton in December of 1961. For twenty-four years he was an Extension Horticulturist (Vegetable Specialist) with the University of Georgia. He was proud of his military service, being a veteran of the United States Air Force serving in World War II as a radio operator in the Aleutian Islands. Mr. Jim was also a Red Coat with Tift Regional Medical Center Auxiliary.

Mr. Barber is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Chris J. and Cindy Barber of Tifton; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Frank Pool of Monticello; his grandchildren, Justin and Kailey Barber, Bethany Barber and Taff Jones, all of Tifton, Rachel and Sam Renick of Kennesaw and his two great grandchildren, Alexander Renick and Oliver Renick.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Tifton, 107 W. 12th Street, Tifton, Ga. 31794.
