Joan Sutton Underwood, 82, a cherished member of the community, passed away on December 2, 2025, at Legacy Village in Tifton, Georgia. Born on April 1, 1943, in Scooterville, Georgia, Joan's life journey took her from the fields of Scooterville, where she developed a strong work ethic on her family's farm, to a successful career as the advertising manager for the Georgia Peanut Commission.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 4, 2025 at New Hope Baptist Church at 4454 GA Hwy 256, Scooterville, Georgia. Rev. Walt Tompkins officiating. Eulogy will be given by Mr. Bo Edenfield. Interment will follow in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:30 P.M. at the church before the service.
Blake Sutton, Keith Sutton, Mark Daniel, Austin McAlpin, Gannon Underwood and Coley Underwood will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the employees of The Georgia Peanut Commission.
Joan was not only dedicated to her career, but she was also profoundly devoted to her family. She is survived by her beloved children, Kerry and Natalie Underwood, and Kirby and Jill Underwood. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Kirsten and Austin McAlpin, Gannon and Jo-Leigh Underwood, and Coley Underwood, as well as her great grandchild, Kerrigan McAlpin. Siblings Glenda Daniel and Vonnie and Tommy Newell, along with her brother and sister-in-law, Mack and Judy Sutton, and her sister-in-law, Joyce Sutton, also survive her. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold Sutton and Edna Booth Sutton and her brother, Lenwood Sutton.
Joan possessed a remarkable ability to connect with others and she enjoyed providing care to those in need. Known for her beautiful smile, her warmth made everyone feel special. Her philosophy was simple yet profound: "keep laughing and keep moving." Joan was a woman of deep acceptance, revealing a love for all people for who they were, and she lived her life joyfully, frequently taking to the road to explore new places.
An avid fan of rock and roll music, Joan’s spirit of adventure and her love for travel reflected her zest for life. She was known to many affectionately as "JoanMa," a testament to her nurturing nature and the love she imparted to those around her.
Joan was also a proud alumna, graduating from Worth County High School and furthering her education with an Associate's degree from ABAC. Her contributions to her profession and her loving personality made her a beloved figure in her community.
Joan Sutton Underwood will be remembered for her loving spirit, her laughter, and the indelible mark she left on the lives of all who knew her. Her legacy of kindness and strength will forever resonate in the hearts of her family and friends.
