Martha Cowart Gordy, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, was born on March 5, 1941, in Lowndes County, Valdosta, Georgia. She spent her childhood in the warmth of a loving family, nurtured by her parents, Louis and Frances Davis Cowart, who have predeceased her in death. Martha departed this world peacefully in her sleep on December 27, 2025, in Tifton, Georgia, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Martha dedicated her life to education and impacted the lives of many children during her teaching career. After graduating from Vidalia High School, she pursued her passion for learning and obtained her Bachelor’s degree of Education from Georgia Southern University. This journey led her to serve with distinction at Northside Elementary School, where she taught reading and fostered a nurturing environment for countless young minds before retiring from the Tift County Board of Education in the 1990s.
A sweet, family-oriented Christian woman, Martha exemplified the values of kindness and generosity. She found joy in family get-togethers and regular meetings with her cherished Silver Vessels Prayer Group. Her spirit sparkled while visiting the dogs at the pet store or sharing delectable meals with friends and family. She was an avid reader and appreciated the quiet moments spent between the pages of a good book, always seeking knowledge and encouragement.
Martha is survived by her sons, Jason Gordy and his wife Ashley, and Michael Gordy and his wife Martha, along with her dear sister Lyndi Dean and her husband Fred. The warmth of her love extends to her grandchildren, Maddie Gordy, Mick Gordy, Bella Delfosse, Ben Barrett, Kaitlin Barrett, and Brendon Barrett, who will carry her spirit in their hearts. She also leaves behind great-grandchildren Gentry Gordy, Winsley Gordy, and Marcelo Delfosse, her cherished nephew Hank Dean, and her former husband Walter Lamar Gordy.
