Mr. Tommy Ray Massey, 76, of Tifton, passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at UF Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00A.M. Tuesday, September 26, 2023 in the chapel of Albritton Funeral Directors with Rev. Larry Layfield officiating. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. on Monday, September 25, 2023 at the funeral home.
Billy Wilson, Bob Muterspaugh, Tom Jones, Rusty Lee, Steve Hyman, and Demetrius Roberson will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Pegram, Damon Harper, Bobby Newell, Tommy Jones, and any ball players whom he coached.
Tommy was born October 11, 1946, in Tift County to the late Eber Massey and Ida Chambers Massey. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Peddy Massey who died on October 6, 2011.
Tommy was a Tift County High School graduate, a United States Air Force veteran, and served with the National Guard. He served in Desert Storm and enjoyed keeping up with his National Guard friends. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Agriculture as an Auditor. Tommy loved being a grandparent, prankster, and softball/baseball coach. He was an entertainment specialist, a connoisseur of hats, and loved to travel. His favorite time of the day was five o’clock.
Tommy is survived by his life partner, Linda Cantlebary, his children, Whit (Heather) Massey, and Bryan (Michele) Cavenaugh all of Tifton, and daughter Miki (Jeff) Mole of Valdosta; ten grandchildren, Justin Byers, and Will (Sheridan) Byers, Cole Byers, Charlie Cavenaugh, Ben Cavenaugh, Beth Cavenaugh, John Michael Cavenaugh, Parker Massey, McKinley Massey, and Whitley Massey; two great-grandchildren, Daxton Byers and Benjamin Byers; his brother, Pete (Faye) Massey; his two sisters, Becky “Honey” Lee (Pat Tillman) of Thomasville and Marydale Massey of TyTy. A brother-in-law John Lewis (Yvonne Wheeler), of Richmond, IL.
