Mother Charlene (Harper) Cleveland

Mother Charlene Harper Cleveland, 86 of Tifton passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 at Tift Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 10, 2021 at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Albritton Funeral Directors with Prophet Langston Cleveland and Apostle Casey Spearman officiating. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home before the service.

Mother Cleveland was born December 22, 1934 in Covington, Tennessee to the late Charlie Harper and Pearl Tyson Moore. She was raised by her stepfather George Moore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Henry Cleveland, Jr., who died in 2003 and her brother, Herman Harper. Mrs. Cleveland was a member of True Light Church of God in Christ for twenty-seven years where she served as church “Mother” and directed their hospitality department. She retired as a Dietician with Bronx Lebanon Hospital of New York and moved to Huntsville, AL with her husband in 1986. She was Valedictorian of her high school class and Salutatorian of her under graduate college at Tuskegee Institute, class of 1958. Mrs. Cleveland completed her Master’s degree at Hunter College in New York City.  She loved gardening, sewing and was an avid reader. Mother Cleveland developed many close relationships with her husband’s family; Thelma Cleveland-Ford (sister-in-law), Helen Hardnett (husband’s cousin) and Elaine Greene (husband’s cousin).

Mother Cleveland is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Langston and Inez Cleveland of Tifton; her daughter, Beverly Pearl Cleveland of Tifton; three grandchildren, Jordan Cleveland, Giovanni Cleveland and Ilianna Cleveland; her sisters, Georgia Veal (Rev. Leon), Carolyn McGlothian (Sylvester), Hazel Moore , Dorcas Moore and Loretta Norfolk; her brothers and sister-in-law, Floyd and Belinda Moore of Conyers, Georgia, Willie Muex and John Foster, Sr.; her sister-in-law, Augustine Harper of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Flowers accepted or donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 2402 Tift Avenue N., Suite 102, Tifton, Ga. 31794.
